Ob-Gyne Ultrasound

Obstetrical Ultrasound
Ultrasound during pregnancy
Ultrasound has emerged as a basic diagnostic tool in obstetrics and gynecology. Being in practice in this field for the last 20 years has been challenging and a breeze because of this breakthrough. Knowledge, skill and experience of the clinician are equally important considerations in coming up with the correct diagnosis and therefore proper management of patients.

Numerous benefits are gained with the aid of an ultrasound. In obstetrics, particularly in the first trimester of pregnancy, with the use of the transvaginal probe, the following are possible: identify pregnancy as early as 5 weeks missed period, localize whether pregnancy is within or outside (ectopic) the uterus, check fetal heart rate, accurately age or date pregnancy, know if there is bleeding inside the uterus (threatened abortion), and visualize uterine masses (myoma) or ovarian newgrowth that may be present.     In the second trimester, with the use of the transabdominal probe, we can: do fetal anatomy/ congenital anomaly scan, monitor fetal growth, identify the location of the placenta and determine amount of amniotic fluid volume. The most common request of patients at this time is gender determination.

In the third trimester, fetal well being (biophysical profile scoring), growth, presenting part (whether cephalic or breech), verification of placental location and amniotic fluid volume; whether the placenta is adherent to the uterus (accreta) and fetal weight are ascertained prior to delivery.

There is great value in performing ultrasound procedures especially in high risk pregnancies complicated by hypertension, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorder and other co-existing medical conditions and poor  obstetrical history.

In the field of gynecology, tumors of the uterus and ovaries which may cause pelvic pain and abnormal uterine bleeding are seen. Follicle monitoring ultrasound is mandatory in patients being worked up for infertility.  Its use is also valuable in teens who never menstruated, and generally in reproductive age women just trying to check if their reproductive organs are normal.

There are many other information that can be derived with the proper use of the  ultrasound machine  and with the expertise that the clinician possesses.
